Numerous dining opportunities exist along South Maui's Sun Coast, including those a half-mile away at The Shops at Wailea, a Beverly Hills-style mall. Among restaurants favored by locals and visitors are: Five Palms Beach Grill - A few minutes' drive from The Palms at Wailea, this restaurant consistently earns acclaim for its food and romantic oceanside setting. Brunch is served daily on the shaded outside terrace. Linen-service dinner takes place inside under ceiling fans in a plantation-type setting. Both feature local ingredients prepared with award-winning finesse. Joe's Bar and Grill - Located in the Wailea Tennis Center a three-minute drive south of The Palms at Wailea, Joe's is owned by former Kingston Trio member Joe Gannon and his chef-wife Beverly. Open for dinner only, Joe's specializes in local seafood, steak, and prime rib.

AMENITIES & SERVICES
What to expect: Comprised of 150 units in two-story buildings, the Palms at Wailea was designed with Mediterranean style (pale-gray stucco with turquoise canopies and red-tile accents). Built on a natural hillside, the resort afford guests the views, the luxury, and the peace and quiet they expect in leafy Wailea. Amenity highlights: A whale-shaped pool just down the hill from the lobby is surrounded by a sundeck containing a hot tub. For barbecuing on units' extra-spacious lanais (patios or balconies), grills can be rented on a first-come, first-served basis. An activities desk in the lobby arranges any tour, excursion, luau, or other activity available on Maui. Snorkeling and scuba-diving enthusiasts appreciate their proximity to the tiny island of Molokini—renowned for the clarity of the water within its crescent—which can clearly be seen offshore against the looming backdrop of Kahoolawe Island. Insider tip: Less than a mile north of the resort, a large, uncrowded stretch of sand called Keawakapu Beach satisfies guests' Hawaiian-vacation dreams. Adjacent to the Mana Kai is a public parking lot for people headed to Keawakapu. Signs point the way to the beach, which offers great snorkeling along its rocky northern terminus, terrific boogie boarding when the tradewinds blow, and long tropical-fantasy walks. Buildings along the beach seldom exceed palm-tree height, somewhat preserving the illusion the beachfront is undeveloped.

Complimentary coffee daily in the lobby and video rentals available at the front desk characterize this resort's attention to the details enhancing community life. Gently falling down the hillside within the resort, a stream in the tropical garden is accompanied by winding walkways for guests to enjoy.
